Learn how to count people over a wide area

Video footfall measurement starts with a camera looking down at a counting zone. What happens when the desired counting area is wider than the camera’s field of vision? Simple, string several cameras together. A scaleable solution to cover as wide an area as you require.

Intelligent counting units tell each other of the presence of a person at the edge of the zone they are monitoring. This means that the system accurately counts a person in the view of two cameras at once, and picks up people crossing the zone diagonally.

Practical tips on Counting over Wide Areas

  1. Use theViewer software to set the counting zone edges.
  2. Mark the edges of the counting zone on the floor using something easily removable like masking tape.
  3. Position the second camera so that its counting zone markers are on top of those of the first camera with an overlap of roughly a 30 cm.
  4. Repeat for the other cameras
  5. Check the video to confirm that someone following the walking line is detected only once.

The ends of the zone lines from the two cameras should be on top of one another, so the counting zones are level and overlapping. This gives 98% accuracy in the people counts.

Retail Sensing

Retail Sensing manufacture the Video Turnstile people counting, vehicle sensing and smart city equipment. Our systems not only measure footfall and traffic, but monitor queues, display occupancy, track shoppers around stores, show heat maps of most visited areas, record passenger numbers, count pedestrians and provide retail intelligence and key performance indicators.
