The University Europea de Madrid is using Retail Sensing ‘s Automatic Passenger Counting system to develop tools for advanced transportation in Smart Cities.
Cameras over the front and rear doors of buses use artificial vision algorithms to count passengers on and off. The system sends this information through a 4G router to a MQTT server, making it globally available.
The passenger counters are currently in action on buses in the centre of Madrid. A web app lets people see the number of passengers using the bus as well as the behaviour of passenger flow at each stop.
The new technologies can be used to improve the traffic flow in cities and a better public transport service can be provided to make more travellers choose public transportation, reducing pollution levels and improving citizens’ mobility.
